Miniature paintings are by definition small paintings. The largest acceptable size is 8 x 10 unframed. I personally feel that they should be smaller than that but it was not my choice. I am currently working to fill a variety of little frames with paintings that will be suited to the individual frame. It is a painstaking process but I feel it is working well. I did not include the frame in the pictures so the art could be appreciated on its own merits.
Painting minis is a challenge best taken up by someone who already has a working knowledge of painting and inclined to be detail oriented. If you really want to do them the basic rules for painting apply along with a few tricks, some of which I am still learning. What you paint on is important fro the small sizes. Canvases tend to have large pores that will show up dramatically in a small size. You can use it but be ready to gesso it and sand it smooth, possibly several times, to get a smooth enough surface.
My latest trial has been to cover my base with a fine weave bed sheet, gesso that and paint. At this moment I have several ready to do but haven’t actually applied paint yet, I’ll let you know how it works.
I have a book on painting minis and in reading that found a lot of information on using ‘ivorine’ an ivory substitute, which, by the way, is hard to find. They basically say that any smooth surface that will hold the paint will work for minis, and the paint itself can be oils or watercolor or acrylics, your choice. I will try watercolor in the future just for fun and to see if it works well for me.
Brushes, obviously, need to be small and fine and suited to whatever paint you choose to work with. I have a favorite that is size 10/0. It has about five hairs, ok a few more, but it is tiny.
Another thing that might be of help is a magnifying light. I’m embarrassed to say that I have one but haven’t used it, yet. At least have a board that you can use to hold onto your future painting, fingers get awfully tired, and easels are generally too big.
So, if you want to try minis go for it, just be patient.
